Carrascolendas
Rediscovering a Pioneer of Bilingual Children's Television
Under Research — A Potential Addition to Language Classics
¡Bienvenidos!
Welcome to Carrascolendas, an imaginative world where Spanish and English come together through music, humor, storytelling, and unforgettable characters.
Created by Aida Barrera and produced in Texas, Carrascolendas aired on PBS from 1970 to 1976. One of the pioneering bilingual children’s television series, it celebrated Hispanic culture while encouraging children to develop confidence, creativity, and respect for others.
Among its beloved characters was Agapito the Lion, portrayed by Harry Frank Porter. Years later, Porter would delight another generation of young viewers as Perro Pepe in the PBS series Amigos.

Preserving Its Legacy
Language Classics is researching the history of Carrascolendas and investigating the availability of additional recordings.
Our search has led us to the American Archive of Public Broadcasting, where recordings from earlier production years are preserved. We hope to learn more about these materials and explore opportunities to help make this important educational legacy more accessible.
